We hear the term anxiety a lot, but what is it exactly? Anxiety is a common mental health issue that affects millions of people around the world. It can manifest in different ways, ranging from mild to severe symptoms that can significantly impact your life. Some of the most common signs of anxiety include constant worry, panic attacks, restlessness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
While the medical community considers anxiety a mental health issue, it can be influenced by a number of different factors including hormones, gut health, toxic relationships, limiting beliefs, environmental toxicity, not being true to yourself, food sensitivities, poor sleep, and more.
Some of the common symptoms are below and there are solutions and helpful ways to manage and even eliminate your anxiety. One of the most effective methods that's I've found is breathwork. And as I've shared before, I love to stack my practices, so I will combine breathwork with essential oils, journaling, sauna, and other modalities.
Below are five key signs that anxiety is impacting your life and we'll discuss how your breath can support you.
Constant Worrying
Do you find yourself worrying excessively about everything, including things that are outside of your control? I'm raising my hand!! This has been me many times in the past, and it still comes up. Anxiety can make you feel like you're always on edge, anticipating the worst-case scenario. This kind of constant worrying can cause stress and negatively impact your quality of life. Breathwork, which involves rhythmic breathing, helps reduce anxiety by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to calm your mind and body.
Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are a common symptom of anxiety and can be incredibly distressing. If you're experiencing panic attacks, you might feel like you're having a heart attack, sweating profusely, or struggling to breathe. Breathwork helps you manage these symptoms by slowing your breathing and regulating your heart rate. Focusing on your breath can also help you shift your attention away from the physical symptoms of a panic attack and reduce your anxiety.
Restlessness
Anxiety can make it difficult to relax and feel comfortable in your own skin. If you're struggling with restlessness, you might find it challenging to sleep or relax. Breathwork can help you calm your mind and body, making it easier to unwind and feel at ease. Focusing on your breath can also help you develop a deeper awareness of your body, which helps you identify areas of tension and release them.
Irritability
Anxiety can cause you to feel irritable or on edge, making it difficult to manage your emotions. This is probably the most prevalent symptom of anxiety I've experienced over the years, and for me, tuning into my breath has been an incredible way to bring me back to center. If you're struggling with irritability, breathwork can help you regulate your emotions by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. This helps you feel more relaxed and in control, reducing your irritability and allowing you to manage your emotions more effectively.
Difficulty Concentrating
Anxiety can make it difficult to focus, which can negatively impact your productivity and quality of life. If you're struggling to concentrate, breathwork helps you clear your mind and improve your focus. Focusing on your breath helps you develop mindfulness, allowing you to be more present and attentive in the moment.
Anxiety can significantly impact your life and make it difficult to function effectively. The great news is you don't have to keep living that way. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's essential to seek help and find ways to manage your anxiety.
Breathwork is one of the best methods I've found that can help you reduce your anxiety by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, calming your mind and body, and improving your focus. And, your breath is always with you!! So why not learn how to harness the power of your breath to activate inner healing? If you're struggling with anxiety, I invite you to bring breathwork into your daily routine.
